Somnath’s professional journey began in India in 2000, immediately after completing his MBA, when he joined Cadbury (now Mondelez). What followed was not a linear climb but a deeply immersive experience across geographies, cultures, and responsibilities.

From managing multiple roles across the length and breadth of India to leading the India business directly and overseeing South-East Asia remotely, Somnath developed a nuanced understanding of markets long before globalization became a buzzword. In 2014, he transitioned to Africa—first in Nigeria managing West Africa operations, and later into the media industry with Zee, based in South Africa, overseeing the Sub-Saharan Africa region.

Having worked across regions representing nearly three billion people, Somnath credits every country and culture for shaping his leadership philosophy. Each market, with its unique socio-economic realities and consumer behaviors, refined his ability to adapt, empathize, and execute with precision.

Early in his career, he introduced an unconventional yet powerful idea—selling chocolates through mobile ice-cream carts in Balasore, Odisha. What began as a local experiment later evolved into a nationally adopted growth driver, demonstrating his instinct for grassroots innovation.

His tenure across FMCG and consumer businesses saw several landmark achievements: record-breaking market share for Coca-Cola in Bihar through brand-zone marketing execution, transformational distribution strategies for ITC Confectionery that tripled regional volumes, and the launch of new route-to-market partnerships for ITC’s personal care segment.

Between 2014 and 2018, Somnath managed and grew fourteen international joint ventures across food and beverage brands, strengthening cross-border partnerships and capital-efficient scaling.

In Africa, he played a pivotal role in laying the foundation of the first Shalina pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Nigeria—securing long-term growth amidst regulatory and forex constraints. His decision to bifurcate distribution strategies for OTC and prescription brands became a blueprint later adopted across multiple African markets.

Somnath’s most defining chapter has been his leadership at Zee Entertainment in Africa. Between 2021 and 2025, he led the unprecedented launch of five hyper-local channels across the region—an achievement rarely matched in emerging media markets.

For the first time, Zee initiated local productions in Africa, successfully executing eighteen profitable productions within just four years. These initiatives were not merely about expansion; they were about relevance. By embedding local narratives, languages, and cultural contexts into content, Somnath transformed Zee’s brand presence across the continent.

The results were transformational—doubling Zee’s distribution footprint from 20 million to 43 million households, while strengthening emotional connect and brand salience across African homes.
