Mike & Andrea Harris: Redefining Compassionate Pet Afterlife Care Through Pet Passages
A Calling Born from Love, Loss, and Compassion
In every industry, there are individuals who build businesses. Then there are those rare visionaries who build something far deeper—something rooted in purpose, humanity, and emotional impact. Mike and Andrea Harris, the driving force behind Pet Passages, belong firmly to the latter category.
At a time when conversations around pet grief and afterlife care were often overlooked, Mike and Andrea transformed personal loss into a movement that would redefine how families say goodbye to their beloved companions. Today, Pet Passages stands as one of the most respected names in pet afterlife care, bringing dignity, compassion, and professionalism to families navigating one of life’s most emotional moments.
What makes their story extraordinary is not simply the growth of the company, but the heart behind it. Every service, every interaction, and every decision reflects a mission centered on empathy, healing, and honoring the bond between pets and the people who love them.
Building a New Standard in Pet Afterlife Services
Mike Harris, Founder and CEO of Pet Passages, is a third-generation licensed funeral director whose background in human funeral services shaped the philosophy behind the organization. Having spent nearly 25 years working in his family’s funeral home, he understood the importance of dignity, remembrance, and compassionate care during moments of grief.
However, it was the heartbreaking loss of his own dogs, Hannah and Luke, that changed the course of his professional journey forever.
During that difficult time, Mike realized there was a major gap in the pet care industry. Families grieving the loss of a beloved pet often did not receive the same level of compassion, respect, and emotional support that existed within human funeral services. For Mike, this realization became deeply personal.
Driven by love for his own pets and guided by generations of funeral service experience, he set out to create a better experience for grieving pet parents. In 2009, he established his first pet funeral home and crematory, introducing a level of care that many families had never experienced before. The response was overwhelming.
Recognizing the growing need for compassionate pet afterlife services nationwide, Mike launched Pet Passages in 2011 with a larger vision—to ensure that every family would have access to meaningful, respectful, and professional afterlife care for their pets.
What began as one heartfelt mission has now grown into a nationally recognized organization with 20 locations across 14 states and several additional locations currently in development.
Andrea Harris: Bringing Healing Through Empathy
While Mike built the foundation of Pet Passages, Andrea Harris brought another powerful dimension to the organization—emotional connection and healing.
Andrea’s introduction to Pet Passages came through personal tragedy. In 2017, while preparing to volunteer in hospice care, her own dog Joey unexpectedly suffered a stroke and had to be euthanized. It was one of the most painful experiences of her life.
As fate would have it, Mike was the one who guided Joey’s afterlife care.
What began as a deeply emotional encounter eventually evolved into both a personal and professional partnership built on compassion, understanding, and shared purpose. Through that experience, Andrea discovered her own calling: helping families navigate grief with care, kindness, and emotional support.
Together, Mike and Andrea have created an organization that does far more than provide services. They provide comfort during some of the hardest moments families experience. Their work acknowledges a truth that millions of pet owners understand deeply—that pets are family.
A Mission Centered on Guiding Families with Compassion
At the core of Pet Passages is a mission that perfectly reflects the company’s purpose: “Guiding pet parents through their pet’s passage.”
This mission is not simply a statement—it is the foundation of how Mike and Andrea approach every aspect of their work.
Unlike traditional business models focused purely on operations or expansion, Pet Passages was built around emotional care. Every family is treated with empathy, patience, and respect. Every pet is honored with dignity.
Mike and Andrea understand that grief associated with losing a pet is real and profound. Their approach creates space for remembrance, healing, and support during an incredibly vulnerable time in people’s lives.
Their vision extends even further. They aim to ensure that every pet family, regardless of location, has access to the level of compassionate afterlife care they believe every beloved animal deserves.
Overcoming Challenges Through Purpose and Faith
Building a nationwide franchise in a highly specialized field was far from easy.
One of the greatest challenges Mike faced was entering the world of franchising without prior experience. Navigating unfamiliar business structures, operational systems, and expansion strategies required resilience, adaptability, and constant learning.
But instead of allowing uncertainty to slow the mission, Mike trusted both his instincts and his purpose. Through years of learning, refining systems, and surrounding himself with the right people, he successfully built a model that continues to grow today.
Mike and Andrea openly acknowledge that their journey has been filled with trial and error, but also with moments of guidance and opportunity that appeared exactly when needed. Their humility, willingness to learn, and unwavering commitment to service became the driving force behind the organization’s success.
Leading an Industry Through Innovation and Education
Today, Pet Passages is recognized as a leader and innovator within the pet afterlife care profession. The organization’s systems, protocols, and compassionate service model have helped establish a higher standard for the industry as a whole.
However, Mike and Andrea are not stopping there.
They are currently developing accredited educational programs designed specifically for veterinarians and veterinary technicians, helping professionals better understand every aspect of pet afterlife care and grief support. This initiative reflects their broader commitment to education, awareness, and improving the overall experience for pet families everywhere.
In addition, the company continues to expand its reach through media appearances, magazine features, and upcoming television projects that aim to bring greater visibility to the emotional importance of compassionate pet afterlife care.
Creating a Legacy That Extends Beyond Business
What makes Mike and Andrea Harris truly remarkable is that their impact reaches far beyond business growth or operational success.
They have helped change the way people think about pet loss.
Through Pet Passages, they have created an environment where grief is acknowledged, memories are honored, and families feel supported during difficult transitions. Their work brings humanity into moments that many people struggle to navigate alone.
In an industry that requires extraordinary emotional strength and compassion, Mike and Andrea continue to lead with authenticity, empathy, and purpose. Their journey stands as a reminder that the most meaningful businesses are often built not simply to succeed—but to serve.
As Pet Passages continues expanding across the country, one thing remains unchanged: the heart behind the mission. Through every family they comfort and every life they honor, Mike and Andrea Harris continue to redefine what compassionate care truly means.
