In 1984, after a successful career with IBM working with major corporate accounts, David made a bold entrepreneurial leap and founded Mass Mitec, a presentation technology company that would later become one of the United Kingdom’s leading organisations in its field.

The business rapidly gained national recognition for technological innovation and entrepreneurship, eventually leading David to establish the National Presentation Network, which expanded to more than 100 outlets across the UK. This achievement positioned him at the forefront of presentation technology during a time when digital communication tools were only beginning to emerge.

However, for David, technology itself was never the final destination. It was always about people.

Pioneering Digital Communities and Immersive Innovation

One of the defining characteristics of David Wortley’s career has been his ability to see possibilities before they become trends.

In 1998, he secured a £250,000 UK Government award for a groundbreaking initiative known as the Community Commerce and Knowledge Network (Comknet). The project became a flagship example of how digital technologies could drive social and economic community development.

At a time when online collaboration was still relatively unfamiliar, David pioneered innovative concepts combining community radio with virtual classroom technologies in what became known as “The Radio with Pictures Show,” reaching audiences on a global scale.

His work continued pushing boundaries in 2000 when he organised and hosted one of the world’s earliest web conferences with more than 300 online participants—a visionary accomplishment during an era when virtual events were far from common practice. This innovation led to his appointment as European Electronic Training Project Manager for HP Media Solutions.

David’s commitment to immersive technologies expanded even further in 2006 when he became the Founding Director of the Serious Games Institute at Coventry University. Under his leadership, the institute became the world’s first international centre of excellence dedicated to exploring the use of video game technologies for non-entertainment purposes, including healthcare, education, training, and behavioural change.

In 2007, David once again demonstrated his visionary thinking by hosting the world’s first hybrid metaverse conference—simultaneously delivered in person and within a virtual auditorium inside Second Life. Years before the metaverse became a global discussion point, David was already exploring its practical applications for communication, education, and human connection.

Over time, David’s work evolved toward an increasingly important mission: helping people improve their health, wellbeing, and quality of life through technology-enabled behavioural change.

By 2013, he had begun pioneering wearable technologies and gamification systems designed for personal health management. His work focused on how digital tools, immersive experiences, and motivational design could encourage healthier habits and sustainable lifestyle improvements.

This passion for preventative healthcare and lifestyle medicine eventually led to international recognition within the healthcare innovation sector. In 2016, David was invited to the launch of the International Society of Digital Medicine in China, where he was later awarded a Vice Presidency in recognition of his contributions to digital health innovation.

Today, his work sits at the intersection of technology, human behaviour, lifestyle medicine, and healthy ageing. Through keynote presentations, consultancy, writing, and educational initiatives, he continues helping organisations and individuals understand how emerging technologies can positively influence both physical and mental wellbeing.

His appointment as Non-Executive Director of World Lifestyle Medicine Education Services (WLMES), the commercial arm of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, further reflects his commitment to advancing global education around preventative healthcare and sustainable wellbeing practices.
